Little Pumpkin Pillows: Kabocha Oyaki
Vegetarian · 7 months+ · en
A comforting autumn dinner side for babies and toddlers. These squishy kabocha squash discs are naturally sweet, packed with Vitamin A, and ideal for baby-led weaning from 7 months up.
- Keep a small bowl of water nearby to wet your fingers; this stops the dough from sticking to your hands.
- You can pair these dumplings with some soft noodles or plain rice for a balanced toddler dinner.
- For older toddlers, you can mix a tiny pinch of mild cheese or grated apple into the dough for fun flavor variations.

Steps
Steam or boil the cubed kabocha squash for about 10 minutes until it is very tender and easily pierced with a fork.
Drain the squash well and transfer it to a bowl. Mash it thoroughly with a fork until smooth.
Stir in the breast milk, formula, or water, then gradually add the rice flour. Mix until a sticky but moldable dough forms.
Using wet hands, divide the dough into 6 small balls and flatten them gently into little discs or 'pillows'.
Lightly grease a frying pan with oil and heat over medium-low. Add the discs and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Add a small splash of water to the pan, cover with a lid, and let them steam for 3-5 minutes until very soft but firm enough to hold their shape.
Remove from the pan and let them cool completely to a safe, warm temperature before serving to your little one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I freeze these oyaki dumplings?
Yes! You can freeze the cooked and cooled oyaki in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Reheat them gently in the microwave or steamer until warmed through, then let cool before serving.
What if the dough is too sticky or too dry?
Kabocha squash moisture varies. If the dough is too dry and crumbly, add an extra splash of milk or water. If it's too wet to roll into balls, add a light dusting of extra rice flour until it holds together.
Can I leave the skin on the kabocha?
For adults and older children, the skin is delicious and nutritious. However, for babies under 12 months, it is safer to peel the kabocha completely as the skin can be tough to gum and presents a potential choking hazard.
