Creamy Yam & Carrot Porridge for Tiny Tummies
Dairy-Free / Mild · 8m+ · en
This comforting Chinese yam and carrot porridge is perfect for warm summer days. It blends easily into a smooth purée for younger babies, or can be left a little chunky for toddlers to practice chewing.
- Always test the temperature of the porridge on the inside of your wrist before feeding your baby.
- To prevent raw diced yam from turning brown, you can soak it in a bowl of cold water if you aren't cooking it immediately.
- If serving a toddler, you can offer this alongside some soft, cut-up fruit for a complete summer meal.

Steps
Rinse the white rice and quinoa thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear, then drain well.
Carefully peel and finely dice the Chinese yam and carrot into small chunks.
In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed grains, diced yam, diced carrot, and 500ml of water. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom, until the grains and vegetables are very soft.
Remove from heat and stir in the mushroom powder and whitebait powder (if using). Allow the porridge to cool down slightly.
For younger babies, use an immersion blender to purée the mixture until completely smooth. For older toddlers, simply lightly mash with a fork to leave some soft chunks for chewing practice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I freeze this porridge for later?
Yes! You can portion the cooled porridge into airtight baby food containers and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw safely in the fridge overnight and reheat until warm before serving.
Is it absolutely necessary to add the whitebait powder?
Not at all. Whitebait powder adds a natural source of calcium and a mild umami flavor, but you can omit it completely or use a tiny splash of low-sodium vegetable broth instead.
What if the porridge gets too thick?
Grains can absorb a lot of liquid as they cool. If it becomes too thick for your baby, simply stir in a little warm water, breastmilk, or formula until you reach the desired consistency.
